A few months ago I wrote a post called Like 12 Monkeys about the insane asylum/POW camp in Buck’s hometown of Taunton, Massachusetts. I thought it might be of interest to some (if you don’t already know) that Martin Scorsese will be filming a movie with Leonardo DeCaprio in Taunton this spring. Here’s the description:
” The film is set in the 1950s in a mental institution with flashbacks to a World War II concentration camp.”
The film is titled Ashecliffe, and is based on the NYT bestselling book Shutter Island by Thomas Lehane, who wrote Mystic River. The casting call for extras is set to take place Saturday in at B.U.
Here’s a link to the article.
I got all excited when I read this post, but the article says they’ll just be filming in Whittenton Mills. Do you know something about them shooting at Taunton State that the author of that article doesn’t? Or did I just read too much into what you said?
Hey, this doesn’t relate to this post but I thought you should check out this yahoo group Freecycle… I’m sending you the link for the El Paso area
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freecycle_elpaso/
It’s great if you are trying to get something or get rid of something for free. For example, say you need a toaster but don’t want to buy one you would post saying :Wanted! Toaster in El Paso and then all of these people send you messages saying I have a toaster you can have, it has the virgin guadelupe on it! (ha – ha!) You get the idea… check it out I thought you might like it.
talk to you soon!!!
And now reading the blog… is that Danvers Insane Asylum?
@ Ethan – I just went to your site, which is really fascinating. I can see why this story interests you. From what I understand (which isn’t much) the filming is set to actually take place at Whittenton Mills in Taunton and 600 extras are needed to play staff and mental patients. (Filming will also take place in Medfield.) What I’m guessing is that the 175-year-old mill has more of the “antiquated look” they want, as the original asylum/camp buildings that remain have been renovated and are being used as municipal offices. But that’s just my guess. For the real deal, you may want to check out the Taunton Gazette story and contact the local reporter, who surely knows why they’re filming at Whittenton. Here’s the link to that story, which includes the reporter’s email address at the bottom: http://www.tauntongazette.com/news/x603845799
@ Dragonfly – Thank you so much for the freecycle link! I’ll definitely check it out. 🙂 And no, that’s not Danvers. That particular asylum is/was in Taunton.
Dragonfly! You need to fix your avatar/name to link to your WordPress Blog! It’s linking to your MySpace. 🙂
again with the out of place comments/messages… I joined technorati and they gave me a code to add a technorati button to my page but I don’t know where to put it. Any thoughts?
Also, I LOVE the “what are they talking about” side bar that you have… where’d you get that from? I also love the currently reading because I’m always looking for new good books to read… now I can just check here haha!
@ Dragonfly – You fixed your link! Excellent. Those things along the side are “widgets” and I do know how you can add them. I’m coming over to your blog now so I can see what page layout you’ve got. 🙂
Love the picture. It will be interesting to see the film after reading what you’ve written about it.
hey everybody. i just want to say i’m a big leo fan and wanted to know if they’re really shooting the film in taunton, ma. i live one town over from taunton and i’ve even had indoor soccer practices at the gym at the state hopsital. so, if the movie’s really being flimed there, well, i just want to say that’s pretty awesome. maybe i can even drive by to catch a glimpse of leo!!!
-sarah =o)
@ MBMQ – I really liked Mystic River, even though it was very sad. I hope this story is just as interesting. I’m sure it will be, and with Scorsese and Leo, it’s got to be worth seeing.
@ Sarah – You should go and audition for a part! Though I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t. I’m sure being an extra is a lot harder than it looks. But maybe you’ll catch of glimpse of Leo. 🙂
Salutations:
Did you hear about how Worcester (my old home town) actually turned down the chance to have their fair city featured in the upcoming Scorsese film and the opportunity to have the old state hospital immortalized?
Wasn’t “convenient”.
Just have to tear it down on schedule.
Really.
This place would make a really cool hotel. Or apartments for those who appreciate the um, unique features …

@ sontag montag – No! I can’t believe they’re tearing down that beautiful building! That’s a crime, it really is. Thanks for stopping by with the link, and for letting us know. We’re really sad to hear this, and you must be too. Wow … it’s really a shocker. And it would have been perfect for the film.
They are tearing down the asylum in Taunton as well (the one in the picture of the original post).
Also, the asylum pictured is different than the one used for recent movies. Pictured is Taunton State Hospital. Though, as Wendy said, Shutter Island was filmed at Medfield State Hospital and the Whittenton Mills.
